I have used acrylic. Seems to do fine.

I airbrush my crank baits so I found that acrylic paints work best. they are water based, non toxic and clans up easy although you have to put a coat of 2 part epoxy to protect your paint job. If you are airbrushing I like Createx and Polytranspar. Polytranspar is a little more expensive but great color options... used by Taxidermists see - wesco.com.

I started out with rattle cans, now use auto paint. The choices are endless in these paints. They have just started to make water based urethanes, all of which are not cost effective.I think you could use Tempra paint as long as the wood is sealed before and the paint after. The sealing seems to be more important than the type of paint for me.
I stumbled on to this site searching for propionate wood sealer.
