 Hey guys...

Really neat site... didn't expect to find exactly what I was looking for all in one place, but hey, I'm not gonna complain.

I've been making beaded, metal, and wire jewellery for several years now and since moving to a home on a lake have decided to venture into making my own lures and such. When I went out to my local tackle shop to buy some, I noticed that many of the componants were the same as what I use in my designs.

I have pretty in depth knowledge of knot tying and stringing techniques as I grew up in Nova Scotia. That kinda thing is bred into a fisherman's daughter I think. I do not, however have any idea what kind of colors to use. Are there specific colors that certain fish like or is it pretty generic?  There are mostly perch. pickeral, stripe bass and small mouth where I fish so if colors are species specific, those are the ones I would be looking for.

Any tips, hints, or helpful links would be much appreciated

Cheers

look online at bass pro shops and rapala websites these will give you an large amount of info for patterns. as for pickeral they will bite anything shiny and slow moving so an tail spin bait in an firetiger pattern is good.

thanks a bunch.... I appreciate the help... I'm glad pickeral are so generic in their taste... they are so freakin yummy! The closest thing to ocean fish there is. :)

Hi Shelby! I hope the lure making business is going well! As aladormax mentioned in their response, you can usually take a look at the fishing retailers to see what is selling (sort by most popular on their online catalogs). As a general rule, you actually design fishing tackle to catch "fisherman" instead of fish! The best selling colors are white, black, and chartreuse. That said, if you're making lures that actually catch fish, you will actually have luck with metalic colors (silver, gold) and black. Based on the research, those are the colors that work best. Enjoy!
