High big kahuna. If you're looking to make your own custom molded designs, your best bet is to actually go to a craft store and buy the supplies individually. Unfortunately, there aren't really any good kits for molding your own custom fishing lures....but there are kits for other hobbies (like miniature trains, action figures, etc.) that you can get through the hobby shops. They would work well for fishing lures too...just create your own lure design instead of creating the train, car or action figure described in the kits.

When you buy those kits, pay attention to the actual material used to cast the figure/lure. Unless you're making sinkers/jigs, avoid the lead or pewter casting kits and stick to the plastic-based ones. Also...the "Great Stuff" that you use to insulate around the pipe holes in your home is a great casing agent. If you make a mold, you can inject that into the mold to form your lure...and then weight it and paint it.

Hope that helps!

great idea on the foam insulation. thanks!!!
cant wait to try it.

i like to use Janns Netcraft catalogs as a quick reference when looking for ideas and whats generally widely available.

i agree with 43/42. you can purchase unpainted crankbaits, topwater baits, stickbaits, vibrating baits and even wood bait blanks through Janns Netcraft for pennies on the dollar. Also a good quality air brush (i.e. Paasche) is a good investment. If you buy an air brush, get yourself a decent oil lubricated air compressor with a water trap. You don't need water/moisture to ruin all your hard work. Good luck.

try buying dowel rods the size of the bait and sand them to form with a grinder & sanding discs or a belt sander it is the easy way, watch you finger nail it tends to get them too.
I use a waterproof craft paint, cleans up with water
