As of January 1, 2010, the Rod Builders Institute is operational.  Sure, we're still working out some of the kinks; but we're holding classes and some very happy students are leaving with a new set of skills and a brand new fishing rod that they built from start to finish.  At the new web site www.rodbuildersinstitute.com you will find this new school described alongside our regular Black Dog Custom Rods operation.  We started the school to provide a jumpstart for beginners or relative newcomers to the craft; and to provide a place for experienced builders to learn the latest techniques and advanced skills.  It's a real classroom environment with plenty of instruction followed by practical application of the skills taught.  Learn what, when, why and how things are done in the building of your own rods.

Yes, you have to come to us for the classes...at least for now.  But, we are located in the midst of some of the best fishing country in the Rockies.  We can give you tips on the places to fish or help you hook up with a local guide to sample the bass, trout, steelhead, salmon or even sturgeon in the area.  It could be the perfect vacation...build a new rod and then fish with it in the Snake or Clearwater or Salmon river...or, head into the back country with your new fly rod to sample world class cutthroat fishing in the mountain streams.
